The trail head was only about 2 miles from the hotel, the sweet Westin La Paloma in Tucson. Ran to the trailhead, ran/scrambled the trail up and down, then a 2 mile run back to the resort. As usual there were many stories to tell, lots of adventure, and the pre-requisite pain that this event always brings to me. This year they say that there were 39,000 runners. We were greeted by sunny skies and an expected high of 53 degrees. What a blast! This experience is very different from any road/"normal" triathlon. The three biggest differences to me were:1) 100% pure adrenaline for the entire swim and bike. 85% adrenaline and concentration required on trail run. You have to be focused and there is very little pacing, especially on the mountain bike.2) Dirty. Front and back. I'm not sure how this occurred, but my 4 hour ride yesterday through downpour and hail (and tornado watch) left me with about a tablespoon of water inside each rim. It was a great ride. 60miles of bliss. The hail pellets actually hurt my bald head as they landed between the slats in my helmet. Got to the lake for an afternoon swim after work. Pancake flat water, 77 degrees air temp, and only one person visible on shore at the part of the lake I swim in. Thanks to 8 year old Travis for taking pictures of me in the water while he steered the "chase boat" that stays 10 yards away from me while I swim. Its great to have a paddle-savvy son to assist as I train. I am comfortable in open water, no wetsuit, at about 250-500 yds. I have to get to 1500 by 10/8...with a wetsuit. Its tough to eat well and not drink too much in Rio while on this fantastic corporate celebration trip. A fun time is being had but we're lucky if we can squeeze in 5 mile runs up and down Copacabana beach every other day.
